Former Real Estate Agent Burbage Earns Health and Wellness Coach Support

The founder of a Charleston company focused on helping people adjust their lifestyles to treat chronic conditions recently landed a certification as specialist in the field.

Lisa Burbage, president of Wellness Five, LLC, earned her National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach designation. Her business provides health coaching to individuals across North America, according to Wellness Five.

Offering the certification exam is the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching, a joint venture of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the International Consortium for Health & Wellness Coaching.

The health and wellness coaching profession has emerged to tackle “an urgent and widespread need” for regulating programs that improve people’s quality of life. While a growing profession, health and wellness coaching has seen varied standards develop for efforts taking place in clinical settings, universities, health plans, private practices and health clubs. To deliver consistent standards, the consortium of 52 health and wellness coach training and education programs and the medical examiner group that administers physician licensing exams in the U.S. teamed up to establish training standards, education programs and a coach certification exam.

The certification looks at coaching relationships, communication techniques, processes for behavior change, health and wellness knowledge, ethics and professional development. Those who pass the exam are designated National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaches. They demonstrate “a standard of practice that assists employers and members of the public in selecting a health and and wellness coach,” supporters say. Visit www.ichwc.org or www.nbme.org/hwc/.

Wellness Five, based in Charleston, says it provides “comprehensive health coaching” to people across North America. Burbage, who spent 27 years in the real estate industry before launching the health and wellness business, holds a master’s degree in counseling and is a national board-certified health and wellness coach. “Focusing on lifestyle changes, she works with individuals of all ages, groups and corporations to inspire, educate and motivate others to actively practice wellness, a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention,” the company says.
